This is not a diatribe against American laws and values: I’m a staunch supporter of America, politcally and socially. My point is that the ALA’s campaign includes the broader issue of writers’ freedom to pen what they desire, and still have an unrestricted audience.

In response to the excellent campaign Banned Books Week, may I draw to your attention a book that has been silenced before it has even come out. I am referring, with modesty but indignation, to my own novel The Confession of the Panther Woman. The blog-hosting company Blogger, directed by parent company Google, has seen fit to place the blog I set up to promote my book under an interstitial.
As no doubt you will know, an interstitial is a warning to the public that content which they might wish to read is considered by the “blocking” authority to be pornographic and/or obscene.
I strongly take issue with this interference with readers’ right to choose, not to mention the high-handed judgement on my work, but unfortunately I find myself powerless to respond with an effective voice. In case you’re interested, the link for my blog is here.
FYI, Confession is presently out to publishers via my New York agent.
I wish your campaign every success, and offer my full support. I look forward
to receiving any comments you may wish to send.
Kind regards,
Mischa KK Bagley.

Looks like 2Pac (deceased American rapper Tupac Shakur, left) had more than just a passing respect for Panthers. The lyrics of his song Can u c the Pride in the Panther attest to a yearning fascination for the exotic feline animal.
“Can you see the pride of the panther
As she nurtures her young all alone
It’s the seed that must grow regardless
Of the fact that it’s been planted in stone . . . “
Mischa says: 2Pac is considered one of the greats of his time. It is logical therefore that he should have intuited that the greatest of all the big cats would bring out the more powerful and emotional aspects of his music.

How to write “black panther” in Japanese kanji. In the romanized alphabet: “Kurohyou.”
Mischa says: koo-ro-hyor.

Wild black panthers measuring up to eight feet long and weighing up to 130 pounds have been sighted in the New York City area at an alarming rate in 2009.
On March 14, New York Palisades resident Grace Knowlton saw an animal “much larger than any domestic cat” crossing her lawn, adding that the creature was “pitch black with a shiny coat.”
Also in March, Dorian Tunnel and his son were disturbed by “two large black panthers” in scrubland only 25 yards from where they were bike-riding in New York’s Tallman State Park.
There were more than a dozen similar such sightings in New York City environs earlier in the year.
Experts noted many sightings coincided with nearby deer killings displaying conspicuously different claw and mauling marks to the normal coyote killings.
Mischa says: Soon the panthers will walk into fashionable Upper East Side restaurants with their own knives and forks and demand top-class service. They’re moving in, folks!

Two cheerleaders supporting the US football team the Carolina Panthers were voted #2 in the Top Ten Cheerleader Scandals of All Time* in September 2008, three years after their original night of infamy.
Discovered having sex with each other in a toilet cubicle at Banana Joe’s Night Club in Tampa, Florida, in March 2005, Renee Thomas (left, pic & mug shot) and Angela Ellen Keathley (right, pic & mug shot), 20 and 26 at the time of their romp, caused complaints from other night club patrons unable to use the occupied restroom. Keathley and Thomas, both apparently drunk, responded with verbal abuse, which escalated into physical violence before the pair were arrested.
Keathley was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer. Thomas was booked on one count of battery and giving a false name, after it was discovered she was underage according to Florida law, having used a fellow Panther cheerleader’s identity to visit Banana Joe’s. That girl was charged with allowing her identity to be misappropriated.
Mischa says: This is not the standard of behaviour we look for in a true Panther Woman. Real Panther Women might be wild, but they’re renowned for their virtue and self-discipline.

* Top slot goes to Arizona State University cheerleader Courtney Simpson, daughter of devout Mormon parents, who went from freshman to porn star in just a few short months, ultimately completing 250 porn movies in under two years. Casts a whole new light on college education.
The late great Michael Jackson’s metamorphosis to and from a black panther in his 1991 Black or White video revealed what is probably one of the greatest animal interpretations on visual record.
Jackson’s movements and temperament fit perfectly with those of his feline counterpart; and the notoriously independent wildcat is an appropriate inspiration for the rebellion and mayhem that fills much of the video.
Truly, Jackson had Panther Pedigree.
Mischa says: Every once in a while history throws up an artist with magical animal instinct. For the last couple of decades it was Jackson. May he sit forever on the right hand of the God of All Panthers.

Actress Rachelle Lefevre (left) studied the habits of big cats to perfect her role as Victoria in the movie Full Moon, the latest offering in the vampire romance Twilight series, due for worldwide release in November 2009.
By watching footage of lion attacks, and clawing and hissing her way through auditions, Lefevre managed to bring feline qualities to her character.
